PRODUCTION

An immersive pop-up installation marking the release of Wonderland, Leibovitz’s monograph of her fashion work, and celebrating her encounters with fashion across five decades, from her groundbreaking work at Rolling Stone in the 1970s through Vogue and Vanity Fair to the present day. MSP designed and fabricated four large-scale LCD screen structures, built the synchronized playback system, and handled post-production and the edit, including a workflow blending digital and analog processes to carry the color of Leibovitz’s prints onto the displays.

THE EXHIBITION

The installation drew on Wonderland’s more than 340 photographs, most of them previously uncollected, including over 30 never before published and more than 90 not seen since their original magazine publication. Visitors encountered Leibovitz’s most ambitious fashion shoots, with looks by designers such as Alexander McQueen, Yves Saint Laurent, and Rei Kawakubo, alongside portraits of designers Stella McCartney and Karl Lagerfeld, athletes Carl Lewis and Serena Williams, and artists John Currin and Matthew Barney.

“Looking back at my work, I see that fashion has always been there,” Leibovitz writes in the preface to Wonderland. “Fashion plays a part in the scheme of everything, but photography always comes first for me. The photograph is the most important part. And photography is so big that it can encompass journalism, portraiture, reportage, family photographs, fashion. … My work for Vogue fueled the fire for a kind of photography that I might not otherwise have explored.”
